Period & Style

Judith Schaechter is a contemporary artist working in stained glass, and like many of the artists in MAD's permanent collection, her work bridges the gap between craft and art. Without a thorough understanding of the craft of cold glass work, an understanding founded in the work of craftspeople from hundreds of years ago, she could not create her own fine art pieces. While Judith's work may be technically grounded in tradition, the subject matters of her pieces can be anything but. The Patron Saint of the Circus Apes Day Parade from MAD's collection is a great example: whimsical, bizarre, and maybe a little creepy, it's also beautifully executed. Other pieces, like the installation Seeing Is Believing, are more closely related to what most people think of when they think of stained glass.
