Young viewers can explore Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ monumental painting “Daniel in the Lions’ Den” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. In this 17th-century painting, the biblical hero Daniel is depicted after surviving a night in a lions’ den, a punishment given to him for worshipping God rather than the Persian king Darius. In his paintings, Rubens masterfully combines realism and theatricality in such a way as to produce a strong emotional impact. Several of the lions, for instance, stare directly at the viewer, and on this huge canvas, they are nearly life-size! There are ten lions in this painting; can you find them all? On view in the West Building, Gallery 45. http://www.nga.gov/collection/gallery/gg45/gg45-50298.html
