Curator Sara Raza explains that her exhibition investigates how ideological aspects of architecture have influenced the making of the contemporary Middle East. She highlights in particular recent works by Kader Attia, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, and Ahmed Mater that address such themes as the influence of colonial history on modernist designers, the persistence of Orientalist fantasy in representations of the region, and the interpolation of modernist aesthetics into some of Islam’s most sacred sites.
