Noting the frequent oversight of emerging contemporary Sri Lankan artists by the organizers of purportedly international exhibitions, curator Sharmini Pereira introduces recent work by a number of local practitioners united by their interest in exploring ideas of national identity and the meanings of “country,” including Anoma Rajakaruna, Chandraguptha Thenuwara, T. Shanaathanan, and Arjuna Gunarathne. Some of these artists make use of the image of Sri Lanka’s flag, others its map. [April 18, 2013 symposium]
