In October 2009, GALLERY CRAWL interviewed Stephani Martinez and Evan Holm to learn more about the mixed-media pieces in their duo exhibition at Hatch Gallery titled PLUME. Martinez incorporates literary references and ideas about gender bias in her work, which ranges from hand embroidered images to large installations of her signature "Doily Cakes." Evan Holm's work attempts to animate the inanimate, and is inspired by simple machines. For PLUME, he created a painting machine powered by piano keys, several creatures made from found objects, and abstract paintings created through the natural process of rusting.
