These photos bizarrely and amusingly reverse this scenario. Instead of showing real astronauts in simulated space situations, the photographs depict a father and son dressed as astronauts, going through the motions of mundane daily life in Indiana. http://artbabble.org/video/ima/brian-mccutcheons-shop-2011-and-cruise-2011#comments Brian McCutcheon Photography Childhood Inspiration Contemporary Art Materials and Process Indianapolis Museum of Art http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/a4/a468c246a51fe7f4/poster-image-07.jpg a468c246a51fe7f4 Wed, 19 Oct 2011 16:43:34 +0000 dbeyer 8912 at http://artbabble.org Brian McCutcheon's Capsule (2011) and Orbit (2011) http://artbabble.org/video/ima/brian-mccutcheons-capsule-2011-and-orbit-2011 <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-institution"> <div class="field-label">Institution:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/partner/indianapolis-museum-art">Indianapolis Museum of Art</a> </div> </div> </div> Capsule (2011) depicts an imaginary flying machine built in the shape of NASA’s historic Mercury space capsule Friendship 7, which on February 20, 1962, launched astronaut John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth. In the video installation Orbit (2011), McCutcheon further explores masculinity through a film reenactment of John Glenn’s infamous voyage. Staged in the interior of Capsule, the performance is represented in an adjacent gallery where two projections, one of Brian and the other of Angus, appear superimposed on a single translucent screen. http://artbabble.org/video/ima/brian-mccutcheons-capsule-2011-and-orbit-2011#comments Brian McCutcheon Fabrication fabricator outer space Sculpture Identity Contemporary Art Materials and Process Indianapolis Museum of Art http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/a7/a7dbfab2e838bff9/poster-image-03.jpg a7dbfab2e838bff9 Wed, 19 Oct 2011 15:09:31 +0000 dbeyer 8911 at http://artbabble.org Brian McCutcheon: Artist Talk http://artbabble.org/video/ima/brian-mccutcheon-artist-talk <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-series"> <div class="field-label">Series:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/series/talks">Talks</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-institution"> <div class="field-label">Institution:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/partner/indianapolis-museum-art">Indianapolis Museum of Art</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Indianapolis-based conceptual artist Brian McCutcheon discusses the new body of work that comprises <i>Brian McCutcheon: Out of this World</i>, his first major solo museum exhibition, opening in the McCormack Forefront Galleries. For the exhibition, McCutcheon uses video, photography, and sculpture to explore the relationships between play, masculinity, and the notion of flight. After realizing that his son is currently the same age that he was during the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing, McCutcheon chose to investigate the duality of father and son relationships through imagery and footage related to space exploration. http://artbabble.org/video/ima/brian-mccutcheon-out-world#comments Brian McCutcheon Multi-Media Photography Sculpture video Indianapolis Museum of Art http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/1a/1ac561a97ec93f84/poster-image-10.jpg 1ac561a97ec93f84 Thu, 25 Aug 2011 13:20:12 +0000 dbeyer 8758 at http://artbabble.org
