Together the photos Cruise and Shop, (2011), take as their point of departure the historic NASA mobility studies through which, prior to departing for space missions, astronauts would practice on Earth in preparation for life in orbit. These photos bizarrely and amusingly reverse this scenario. Instead of showing real astronauts in simulated space situations, the photographs depict a father and son dressed as astronauts, going through the motions of mundane daily life in Indiana.

Capsule (2011) depicts an imaginary flying machine built in the shape of NASA’s historic Mercury space capsule Friendship 7, which on February 20, 1962, launched astronaut John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth. In the video installation Orbit (2011), McCutcheon further explores masculinity through a film reenactment of John Glenn’s infamous voyage. Staged in the interior of Capsule, the performance is represented in an adjacent gallery where two projections, one of Brian and the other of Angus, appear superimposed on a single translucent screen.

Indianapolis-based conceptual artist Brian McCutcheon discusses the new body of work that comprises Brian McCutcheon: Out of this World, his first major solo museum exhibition, opening in the McCormack Forefront Galleries. Grounded in the technological and fantastical world of space exploration, McCutcheon’s show functions as a children’s book narrative replete with rocket trajectories and moon landings.

The solo exhibition Brian McCutcheon: Out of this World features a new body of work by Indianapolis-based conceptual artist Brian McCutcheon. For the exhibition, McCutcheon uses video, photography, and sculpture to explore the relationships between play, masculinity, and the notion of flight. After realizing that his son is currently the same age that he was during the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing, McCutcheon chose to investigate the duality of father and son relationships through imagery and footage related to space exploration.
