Dallas Museum of Art Collection: The Seine at Lavacourt by Claude Monet

In a deliberate attempt to reach a larger public and market, Monet submitted the traditionally formulated Seine at Lavacourt to the 1880 Salon. It was accepted, but the canvas was poorly hung and never attracted much attention except from writer Emil Zola, the vocal advocate of impressionism, who described it as "an exquisite note of light and open air."

In the same year, Monet submitted another, more audacious scene, which was refused. He would never again offer a painting to the Salon.

In order to create this water garden at his home in Giverny, France, Monet had to divert a small stream and form a pond, which he surrounded with flowers and bushes. His prized water garden became a subject he explored obsessively; he painted more than 200 paintings of his beloved lily pond. Take a walk in the artist’s garden in this video from the Children’s Video Tour, featuring Claude Monet’s “The Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil.” Monet painted this picture in 1880, while he was renting a house in Vétheuil, a village outside of Paris near the banks of the Seine. The artist was a passionate gardener, and planted flowers wherever he lived. The young boy depicted is Monet’s son, and on the steps behind him are other members of his extended household.
