Young viewers can explore Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ monumental painting “Daniel in the Lions’ Den” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. In this 17th-century painting, the biblical hero Daniel is depicted after surviving a night in a lions’ den, a punishment given to him for worshipping God rather than the Persian king Darius. In his paintings, Rubens masterfully combines realism and theatricality in such a way as to produce a strong emotional impact. Several of the lions, for instance, stare directly at the viewer, and on this huge canvas, they are nearly life-size!

This film captures the power of faith in the face of danger, illustrated in the famous Old Testament story of Daniel in the lions' den and in Peter Paul Rubens' full-scale painting at the National Gallery. Daniel's travail in a closed cave unfolds here through a series of comparative frames: Rubens' preparatory drawings, painted lions with human bones at their feet, and footage of actual lions, similar to those Rubens saw at the royal menagerie in Brussels.
