Learn about Rembrandt van Rijn’s 17th-century self-portrait in this video
from the Children’s Video Tour. In this work, Rembrandt painted himself at
53 years old, wearing an artist’s cap and brown painter’s jacket. Strong
light spotlights his face, drawing attention to his deep-set eyes, wrinkled
cheeks, and furrowed brow. Over the course of his career, Rembrandt painted
nearly 100 self-portraits at various ages, and often used his physical
appearance as a means to depict his mood.

Explore Rembrandt van Rijn’s painting “The Mill” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. Known as one of Rembrandt’s greatest works, this 17th-century painting depicts a large windmill against a stormy sky. Rembrandt enjoyed painting details of Holland’s landscape, including the farms, waterways, bridges, cottages, and mills that made it unique. The artist’s father owned a mill on the banks of the Old Rhine, near the town of Leiden. The mill was called “De Rijn,” which is Dutch for “the Rhine,” which is how his family got its name.

February 15 through May 15, 2011 When Henry Clay Frick (1849–1919) was
asked whose talents he would most like to possess, he declared:
"Rembrandt's." And as the largest individual railway stockholder in the
world, Frick is reported to have said that "railways are the Rembrandts of
investment." Like Frick, the Dutch art historian Frederik Johannes Lugt
(1884–1970) was a great admirer and collector of works by the Dutch artist
Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669); as a teenager he wrote a biography of the
artist, illustrated with his own copies after Rembrandt's most famous works.
