But, just as he appears in this self-portrait, Van Gogh was a sensitive and thoughtful painter who was passionate about art. He once said “Portraits …excite me to the depth of my soul. They make me feel the infinite more than anything else.” On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 83. <a href="http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=106382" title="http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=106382" rel="nofollow">http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=106382</a></p> <p>-----</p> <p><a href="http://artbabble.org/video/ngadc/self-portrait-1889-vincent-van-gogh" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://artbabble.org/video/ngadc/self-portrait-1889-vincent-van-gogh#comments European Painting For Kids French painting Painting Portraiture Post-Impressionism self portrait Vincent van Gogh Learning to Look National Gallery of Art, Washington http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/18/18c993a43f9750dc/poster-image-08.jpg 18c993a43f9750dc Fri, 30 Sep 2011 19:55:15 +0000 s-sarraf 8854 at http://artbabble.org "Farmhouse in Provence," 1888, Vincent van Gogh http://artbabble.org/video/ngadc/farmhouse-provence-1888-vincent-van-gogh <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-series"> <div class="field-label">Series:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/series/childrens-video-tour-time-travel">Children&#039;s Video Tour-Time Travel</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-institution"> <div class="field-label">Institution:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/partner/national-gallery-art-washington">National Gallery of Art, Washington</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Take a closer look at Vincent van Gogh’s “Farmhouse in Provence” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. In 1888, Van Gogh decided to leave the bustling city life of Paris. He moved to the quiet town of Arles in Provence, an area of southern France. The region had scorching hot summers and bright, strong sunshine. The dazzling sunlight, glowing wheat fields, and blooming sunflowers were very different than any place Van Gogh had lived before. He was inspired by the beauty of the landscape and often painted outdoors to capture the bright colors and intense light around him.</p> <p><a href="http://artbabble.org/video/ngadc/farmhouse-provence-1888-vincent-van-gogh" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://artbabble.org/video/ngadc/farmhouse-provence-1888-vincent-van-gogh#comments European Painting For Kids French painting Painting Post-Impressionism summer Vincent van Gogh Learning to Look National Gallery of Art, Washington http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/65/652a91656fcca963/poster-image-04.jpg 652a91656fcca963 Fri, 30 Sep 2011 19:29:20 +0000 s-sarraf 8853 at http://artbabble.org Portraits: Van Gogh and Whistler http://artbabble.org/video/dia/portraits-van-gogh-and-whistler <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-series"> <div class="field-label">Series:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/series/frame-exploring-detroit-institute-arts">In The Frame: Exploring the Detroit Institute of Arts</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-institution"> <div class="field-label">Institution:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/partner/detroit-institute-arts">Detroit Institute of Arts</a> </div> </div> </div> Host Graham Beal (DIA Director) provides a snapshot of the history of portraiture, it's incredible scope and diversity, and explains what kinds of things we learn about the sitters and their societies, about the artists themselves, and about the evolution of the genre. http://artbabble.org/video/dia/portraits-van-gogh-and-whistler#comments European Painting Impressionism James Whistler Painting Portraits Portraiture Vincent van Gogh People European Art Detroit Institute of Arts http://artbabble.org/sites/default/files/bvideos/db/dbd63e5e1a99c98b/poster-image-04.jpg dbd63e5e1a99c98b Tue, 17 May 2011 20:08:37 +0000 DetroitInstituteofArts 8496 at http://artbabble.org In The Frame: Van Gogh's Self Portrait http://artbabble.org/video/dia/frame-van-goghs-self-portrait <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-series"> <div class="field-label">Series:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/series/frame-exploring-detroit-institute-arts">In The Frame: Exploring the Detroit Institute of Arts</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/series/frame-exploring-detroit-institute-arts">In The Frame: Exploring the Detroit Institute of Arts</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-institution"> <div class="field-label">Institution:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/partner/detroit-institute-arts">Detroit Institute of Arts</a> </div> </div> </div> The Detroit Institute of Arts celebrates turning 125 years old with an Anniversary Tour highlighting works chosen by curators.
