In this video from the Children’s Video Tour, kids can learn about Vincent van Gogh’s 1889 “Self-Portrait.” Van Gogh’s career as an artist lasted only ten years, and he died not long after he made this painting. But, just as he appears in this self-portrait, Van Gogh was a sensitive and thoughtful painter who was passionate about art. He once said “Portraits …excite me to the depth of my soul. Take a closer look at Vincent van Gogh’s “Farmhouse in Provence” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. In 1888, Van Gogh decided to leave the bustling city life of Paris. He moved to the quiet town of Arles in Provence, an area of southern France. The region had scorching hot summers and bright, strong sunshine. The dazzling sunlight, glowing wheat fields, and blooming sunflowers were very different than any place Van Gogh had lived before. He was inspired by the beauty of the landscape and often painted outdoors to capture the bright colors and intense light around him.
