When The Icebergs was first exhibited at a Civil War fundraising exhibition, critics hailed it as "the most splendid work of art that has yet been produced in this country." Both sides of the Atlantic thrilled to this dramatic scene, which was based on sketches made by the artist during a month-long chartered boat trip in the North Atlantic, off the Canadian coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

How does an artist connect to the world while working alone? In this film, artist Keltie Ferris begins a new series of abstract paintings in her Bushwick, Brooklyn studio. Painting in isolation, Ferris discusses both the pleasures and anxieties of working in solitude. Throughout the film, Ferris looks outside of her daily studio process for connections to the world, taking stock of viewer’s responses to her work, finding inspiration in both books and the urban environment, and situating her paintings in an art historical tradition.

When does a painting stop being a private object and start becoming a public work? In this film, artist Keltie Ferris prepares for her show KF + CM 4EVER (2010) by crating a new series of paintings in her Bushwick studio, shipping the work across town in a van, and installing the exhibition at Horton Gallery in Chelsea—all in the same day. The artist and a team of art handlers shadowbox a “tacky” painting and roll a second painting that’s too large to fit through the studio door.

In this video, children can learn about Edward Savage’s painting “The Washington Family,” which quickly became an icon of our country’s pride. President Washington and his family posed for Savage several times in New York City, then the nation’s capital, between 1789 and 1790. It took the artist seven years to turn the drawings he made of the Washingtons into this large family portrait, which was exhibited in 1796. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 62. http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=561

In this video from the Children’s Video Tour, kids can learn more about four paintings by American artist Thomas Cole, which depict the artist’s vision of the journey through life, from birth to old age. Study these paintings as a group and compare the skies, weather, river, and surrounding landscapes. Consider how the forces of nature change from scene to scene, creating a different mood in each one. Which stage of life do you think the artist felt was the most exciting? On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 60. http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=52450&detail=none

Take a walk in the jungle in Frederic Edwin Church’s painting “El Rio de Luz (The River of Light).” Church, who was a student of the great American painter Thomas Cole, traveled to the jungles of South America, where he made color sketches of the flowers, trees, and plants. Once he returned to his studio, he turned his sketches into large landscape paintings. Look closely—do you see the red-chested hummingbirds sitting on the tree branches? On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 67. http://www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/ploc?object=50299

In this video from the Children’s Video Tour, art lovers of all ages can explore William Michael Harnett’s work, “The Old Violin,” one of the artist’s most famous paintings. The best-known and most influential still-life painter in America during the last quarter of the 19th century, Harnett was a master of the trompe-l’oeil style of painting—a French phrase that means “fool the eye.” He painted objects life-size, and used such precise detail, exact colors, and convincing texture, that appearance seems like reality. On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 69A.
