Chop Stick, created by the Swedish architecture duo visiondivision, provides
visitors to 100 Acres a place to sit, swing, and enjoy refreshments in an
outdoor pavilion crafted almost entirely from a single tree. The
100-foot-tall tulip tree—the state tree of Indiana—was found in a forest
near Anderson, Indiana, and transported to 100 Acres with a large portion of
its limbs intact. The design for Chop Stick revolves around the architects'
ambition to harvest a material as gently and thoughtfully as possible.

In 1420, in an effort to consolidate his control over the throne, the emperor
of the Ming Dynasty moved China's capital to a site in the North, now known
as Bejing. There, he built a vast complex of palaces and administrative
buildings now covering 178 acres. Because access was restricted to the
imperial family and to those who had business with them, it came to be known
as the Forbidden City. Learn more in this short documentary.

Marlon Blackwell, architect of the award-winning Ruth Lilly Visitors Pavilion
talks about the focus on the origins and inspiration for his work in 100
Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. Reviewing the process
that was proposed in collaboration with Ed Blake and Mary Miss, the talk will
discuss how the artwork drove the development of the park rather than the
architecture. In addition to a focus on the design and detailing of the
Visitors Center, Blackwell will also provide an overview of the original
vision including the Walkway Bridge and the Experiential Center.

Korean-born New York based artist Sun K. Kwak makes the invisible visible
using a surprisingly simple medium: black masking tape. Through a process
infused with an element of performance, Kwak channels surrounding energy to
manifest a movement of lines, liberating the space and transforming it into a
new pictorial reality. For the "Phantoms of Asia" exhibition at the Asian Art
Museum (on view from May 18-September 2, 2012), Kwak creates a site-specific
installation for the museum's North Court, which will not be seen again after
the exhibition closes.

Invited by the Hammer to participate in our Artist Residency Program,
VanDerBeek spent several weeks in Los Angeles over the past year. The works
included in her Hammer Project have grown out of this residency and offer a
particular view into our city. After she finished her installation in the
vault gallery at the museum, we spoke with her about this project.
