Brooklyn-based artist William Lamson (b. 1977) forges a captivating
exploration of forces of nature and the passage of time through his
inventive, often poetic interventions into natural and man-made environments.
Hear from the artist and curator Sarah Green about Divining Meteorology and
how it works.

In November, 2010 we visited Charles Gaines in his studio to discuss his work
in the exhibition "All of this and nothing", the "Manifestos". Gaines has
been described as "one of the first, if not the first, African American, to
work in the field of conceptual art." He is interested in how one experiences
art and derives meaning from it. He focuses on the internal politics that
form our ideas and feelings toward art, expressed through linguistic tools
such as metaphors and metonyms.

To create Divining Meteorology, Lamson reanimated a former communications
tower by transforming it into an instrument. Originally designed to withstand
the trials of nature, this monumental tower was relocated from the Missouri
countryside to the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion and re-engineered to
fit inside the space, as if it had collapsed into itself.

A key figure in the invention of Conceptual Art in the 1960s, Tom Marioni’s
identity as artist, writer, and curator defies categorization. In 1970, he
founded the Museum of Conceptual Art in San Francisco as a venue to support
his own work and that of his friends and colleagues, and he has published his
writings in various periodicals and books. Through the decades, Marioni has
continued to, in his words, “observe real life and report on it
poetically”, amassing a body of work comprised of drawings, prints,
actions, and writings that articulate his desire to unite people and ideas.
