Chop Stick, created by the Swedish architecture duo visiondivision, provides
visitors to 100 Acres a place to sit, swing, and enjoy refreshments in an
outdoor pavilion crafted almost entirely from a single tree. The
100-foot-tall tulip tree—the state tree of Indiana—was found in a forest
near Anderson, Indiana, and transported to 100 Acres with a large portion of
its limbs intact. The design for Chop Stick revolves around the architects'
ambition to harvest a material as gently and thoughtfully as possible.

Marlon Blackwell, architect of the award-winning Ruth Lilly Visitors Pavilion
talks about the focus on the origins and inspiration for his work in 100
Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. Reviewing the process
that was proposed in collaboration with Ed Blake and Mary Miss, the talk will
discuss how the artwork drove the development of the park rather than the
architecture. In addition to a focus on the design and detailing of the
Visitors Center, Blackwell will also provide an overview of the original
vision including the Walkway Bridge and the Experiential Center.

Revealing the extraordinary range of art produced by Native American
cultures, Art of the American Indians: The Thaw Collection features more than
100 outstanding works from one of the premier collections in the country. The
exhibition presents an astonishing variety of pieces, including ritual
objects, ceremonial clothing, pottery, and basketry. These masterworks
provide a glimpse of the diversity of expression found in Native American
art, and reflect the importance of the arts in sustaining ancient traditions
that still exist today and will endure in the future.

In this video from the Children’s Video Tour, viewers are introduced to the painting “Forest Scene” by Jacob van Ruisdael. This masterpiece from the Gallery’s collection is an impressive example of a Dutch landscape painting, which was painted by the artist in the 17th century. The artist specialized in painting the countryside, carefully observing nature to capture the colors and textures of the earth, trees, and plants. But even though this forest scene looks realistic, it does not depict an actual location in the Dutch countryside.

In this video from the Children’s Video Tour, kids can learn more about four paintings by American artist Thomas Cole, which depict the artist’s vision of the journey through life, from birth to old age. Study these paintings as a group and compare the skies, weather, river, and surrounding landscapes. Consider how the forces of nature change from scene to scene, creating a different mood in each one. Which stage of life do you think the artist felt was the most exciting? On view in the West Building, Main Floor, Gallery 60. http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=52450&detail=none

New York-based artist Mary Miss shares her latest city-wide project,
commissioned by the IMA: FLOW (Can You See the River)? FLOW is Miss’
precedent project for City as Living Laboratory: Sustainability Made Tangible
through the Arts (CaLL), a framework developed by Miss and Marda Kirn,
Executive Director of EcoArts Connections. CaLL offers a vision for linking
the arts with science, urban planning, and education to help us imagine and
create cities that redefine how we live our lives, use our resources,
communicate, educate, and work.

Laurie Olin, RLA, FASLA, is a distinguished teacher, author, and one of the
most renowned landscape architects practicing today. Olin studied civil
engineering at the University of Alaska and pursued architecture at the
University of Washington, where Richard Haag encouraged him to focus on
landscape. His involvement often marks the signature of OLIN’s
distinguished portfolio of projects, which spans the history of the studio
from Bryant Park in New York City to the Brancusi Ensemble in Romania.
