June 29–October 8, 2012

This video focuses on Rineke Dijkstra's series of portraits of Almerisa, whom the artist met as a child in a refugee center for Bosnian asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Dijkstra and Almerisa each describe the experience of taking their first photograph together and discuss how the series has evolved over the course of Almerisa's life as she grows from a young Bosnian girl into a Dutch woman with her own child.

Technological breakthroughs are usually as much revelations as revolutions,
satisfying powerful latent demands. Twentieth-century people embraced
mobility, economy, lightness, spontaneity, rapid feedback and sharing with
friends and family. Supplanting earlier miniature cameras, the 21st-century
cell phone camera has delivered all those qualities. Like the Polaroid and
the cheap film camera, it offers a distinctive look that appeals even to some
professionals. And it has also amplified anxieties about photography:
security, privacy, and intellectual property.

What can we tell about a photograph by knowing about the camera used to make
it? The painters featured in the IMA exhibition Snapshot: Painters and
Photography, Bonnard to Vuillard were experimenting with the newest
technology of their era; the photos they made were created in a highly
charged creative atmosphere, buoyed by the democratization of the camera and
the birth of amateur photography.

The invention in 1888 of the first manageable, easy-to-use camera for
amateurs made spontaneous photography possible: the snapshot was born. What
role did photography play in the lives of artists of the period and how did
it influence their work? The exhibition Snapshot: Painters and Photography,
Bonnard to Vuillard sheds a light on this creative process, presenting 200
photographs and 60 paintings, prints and drawings from seven artists

One day in early July 1861, Carleton Watkins set up his cumbersome camera
along the Merced River and aimed it eastward up the Yosemite Valley toward
Tasayac, or Half Dome, a peak that towered a half mile above the valley
floor. In that instant, Watkins captured for the first time what millions of
park visitors would subsequently shoot from that same vantage point.

Over the period 1870 to 1945 the American West became an increasingly popular
sketching ground for eastern artists. The first arrivals were view-painters
like Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran whose panoramic paintings, reproduced
as chromolithographs, brought the unimagined majesty of the Rockies and
Sierras to a broad eastern audience. They were followed by reportorial
artists such as Frederic Remington and the photographer Edward Curtis intent
on preserving artistically and romantically the disappearing frontier and
Native American culture.
