In this work, Rembrandt painted himself at 53 years old, wearing an artist’s cap and brown painter’s jacket. Strong light spotlights his face, drawing attention to his deep-set eyes, wrinkled cheeks, and furrowed brow. Over the course of his career, Rembrandt painted nearly 100 self-portraits at various ages, and often used his physical appearance as a means to depict his mood.
