A landmark exhibition of African art, Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria presents a glimpse of the extraordinary accomplishments of the legendary royal city-state of the Yoruba people from the 12th-15th centuries. During this period, Ife (pronounced “EE-fay”) was ruled by powerful sacred kings and queens, whose images are captured in stunningly naturalistic cast copper-alloy and terra-cotta heads and figures.

Tara Donovan: Untitled will highlight MacArthur Genius Award-winner Tara Donovan's layered landscape-like installations made from common everyday materials, such as plastic cups, tar paper, cut electrical cable, pencils and Elmer's glue. The exhibition will include a number of existing works along with new sculptures commissioned by the IMA.

Video artist Sam Easterson has been collecting footage from the perspective of animals and plants since 1998. On June 24, 2007 an exhibition of his video works, Nature Holds My Camera: The Video Art of Sam Easterson opened at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This exhibition will featured works from the extensive video library that Easterson has developed, including new footage created specifically for the IMA. Judith G. Levy's art deals with themes of memory, exploring the fleeting nature of individual experience, the similarities and differences between collective and personal acts of remembering, and how memories can be explicit or elusive.

The installation is composed of a monumental "cloud" made from white plastic photo viewers that hang on strands of metal chain. The viewers are designed to be held up to the light to reveal an image inside.

Artists today are reflecting our crazy world back to us trying to capture our attention, make us think, force us to care. We searched the world and scoured the Bay Area for artists with something to say and then we listened to them. When we sat back and thought about all the artists and programs we were considering for the upcoming season, we began to see some common themes running through the works. We talked. We thought. We debated. Out of these conversations we culled three Big Ideas that seem to be top of mind for artists today.

Todd Schorr: American Surreal is the first mid-career retrospective of the Los Angeles-based artist. Schorr is a leading figure in Southern California’s cartoon-based movement, dubbed “Pop Surrealism,” which embraces low-brow culture and a ribald graphic style indebted to pop sources such as Mad magazine. Schorr’s astonishing, highly polished realism, (inspired by Bosch, Brueghel and Dali), sets him apart from his best-known peers such as Camille Rose Garcia, Gary Baseman, and Mark Ryden.
