Something is features a newly commissioned body of work by Indianapolis-based
emerging artist Lauren Zoll that explores the intersections of painting and
video. Numerous large-scale paintings, videos, and a collage affixed directly
to the gallery wall will form an immersive and variable installation in the
Carmen & Mark Holeman Gallery. Something is proposes an open-ended
investigation—the title itself is the start of a phrase to be completed by
exhibition visitors as they interpret the changing and foreign environment of
the installation within the gallery.

This video focuses on Rineke Dijkstra's series of portraits of Almerisa, whom the artist met as a child in a refugee center for Bosnian asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Dijkstra and Almerisa each describe the experience of taking their first photograph together and discuss how the series has evolved over the course of Almerisa's life as she grows from a young Bosnian girl into a Dutch woman with her own child.

Aziz + Cucher: Some People features a new body of work by the New York-based
collaborative of Anthony Aziz and Sammy Cucher. Working together since 1992,
Aziz + Cucher are widely recognized as pioneers in the field of digital
imaging. Through the use of digital animation, performance, video, and sound,
Some People situates recent and current conflicts into a never-ending
narrative that exists outside of a specific place and time. The outbreak of
war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006 profoundly affected the artists, who
have cultural and familial ties to the area.

In the Spring of 2011 the Chipstone Foundation and the Milwaukee Art Museum
invited sixteen established artists from Britain and America to participate
in an unusual experiment. Each artist was asked to lay aside his or her
standard tool kit and craft a work of art with one tool alone. The challenge
presented to the artists sounds simple: create a work of art with one tool.
The material and tool were left open-ended with the purpose of encouraging
creativity within the one-tool constraint.

How little does an artist need in a moving image to tell a story? In this film, artist Tommy Hartung employs minimal means and materials to create animated movies, performing a series of experiments in his basement studio in Ridgewood, Queens. Hartung’s remodeled underground space functions as a workshop—or in the words of a friend, an “arena”—with colored lights, dioramas, and puppet-like characters.

We were invited behind-the-scenes at the shoot for Yoshua Okon's latest video
Octopus. The piece, shot on location at a Los Angeles Home Depot store,
explores the relationships among Guatemalan day laborers who at home fought
on opposite sides of the Guatemalan civil war, yet here in the U.S. are
working side-by-side in their efforts to find employment. The work was
produced during Okon's residency with the Hammer. He explains more about the
work in this video. (Run time: 8 minutes)

Is being a performance artist just another job? In this film, artist Shana Moulton rehearses and performs Whispering Pines 7 in the exhibition Acting Out at the Bronx River Art Center. In her 14th floor studio at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace, an artist residency program of repurposed offices located in the heart of Wall Street, Moulton gathers up the essential tools of her trade — costume, wig, makeup, DVD — and takes the long uptown subway trip to the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.
