Paris to Fort Lee: French Filmmakers and the American Industry

A centennial screening of the 1912 film Robin Hood and rare presentation of the Maurice Tourneur film Alias Jimmy Valentine (1915) with live piano accompaniment are introduced by film historian Richard Koszarski, author of Fort Lee, the Film Town and Hollywood on the Hudson. Koszarski's presentation outlines the influence of French culture on early cinema production and investigates the history of the studios, the directors, and the stars established in Fort Lee, New Jersey, known as the "birthplace of the motion picture industry."

In 1420, in an effort to consolidate his control over the throne, the emperor of the Ming Dynasty moved China's capital to a site in the North, now known as Bejing. There, he built a vast complex of palaces and administrative buildings now covering 178 acres. Marlon Blackwell, architect of the award-winning Ruth Lilly Visitors Pavilion talks about the focus on the origins and inspiration for his work in 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. Reviewing the process that was proposed in collaboration with Ed Blake and Mary Miss, the talk will discuss how the artwork drove the development of the park rather than the architecture. In addition to a focus on the design and detailing of the Visitors Center, Blackwell will also provide an overview of the original vision including the Walkway Bridge and the Experiential Center.
