Art of Another Kind: Director James Johnson Sweeney's Legacy

Since its beginnings as a private collection, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum collection has evolved to reflect the dramatic shifts in art making over the past 150 years. Art of Another Kind curators Tracey Bashkoff and Megan Fontanella explain the collection’s history and the contrasting yet synchronous visions of former directors Hilla Rebay and James Johnson Sweeney in making the Guggenheim a repository for the art of our time.

Artist-in-Residence: Mathieu Grodet - March 2012

Mathieu Grodet is a French-born artist living and working in Canada. He creates thin and elegant glass objects in classic Venetian style, engraved with imagery that addresses modern-day ideas and issues. In his March 2012 Residency at The Studio, Grodet used the Museum's Rakow Library to research forms and styles for vessels, as well as sketches for his final drawings on the vessels.

Object Lab 4.0's students were asked to create a video Remixing a work from Chipstone's collection. They had free range of the Chipstone Foundation's grounds and objects to illustrate new ways of understanding a historic ceramic. In this video, Adriana Vazquez, Morgan Valenzuela and Tara Plath interpret a sign language plate and the idea of speaking while silent.

Object Lab 4.0's students were asked to create a video Remixing a work from Chipstone's collection. They had free range of the Chipstone Foundation's grounds and objects to illustrate new ways of understanding a historic ceramic. In this video, Brittany Kieler, Jordan McDonald and Dylan Lustrin examine and interpret the iconography on an 1804 jug.
