Learn about current IMA events with Melvin and Bren Simon Director and CEO Maxwell Anderson. This episode features an in-gallery talk with IMA Curator, Niloo Imami-Paydar
Hi, I am Max Anderson, The Melvin and Bren Simon Director and CEO of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and welcome to The Paul Fashion Arts Gallery.
I am standing with Niloo Paydar, who is our Curator of Textiles and Fashion Arts. Welcome Niloo, thanks for joining us. What are we looking at today on this remarkable assemblage of dresses?
What we have in this exhibition are some of the Halston signature pieces. We have the pajamas, the caftan, the beaded dresses, the cashmere outfits,
and his elegant and beautiful evening dresses.
You mentioned cashmere, what are some of the inspirations that he drew upon?
Well, it was his favorite fabric and he always wore a black turtleneck. It was his signature look and what he did was basically
taking a jumpsuit and updating this sort of workers outfit. But these were sexy; they were clinging to the body and showing a lot of skin.
What I love about his work is the simplicity and you hardly see any buttons, zippers...He was really truly the first minimalist fashion designer.
When would you say his designs started to have an impact?
1970s American Fashion was defined by Halston designs. His legacy is introducing a minimalism in the design and combining comfort and luxury, defining the true American style.
Thank you for joining me and Niloo Paydar in Simply Halston, an exhibition that will run through 2008 at the IMA.
