Umthombo street children
0:02:34
Umthombo, meaning a voice from the streets, is a unique South African street children organisation led by former street children. Umthombo aims to change the way that society perceives and treats street children. They educate society as to the realities of the street child experience and through developing and implementing working strategies to address the issue.

The Umthombo drop-in centre in Durban, South Africa, provides a day-care service for 50 of the city’s 3000 street children. Jair Straschnow and Gitte Nygaard stayed at the centre for several weeks and designed several practical solutions for some of the problems the center is facing. In order to create a space for personal expression, they designed tables and benches for playing games, drawing and writing. The Postbox Lockers provide the children with storage for their belongings but they also provide a symbolic ‘identity’ or ‘address’ for these dispossessed children. In this way Straschnow and Nygaard draw attention to these children’s unfortunate situation.

I really enjoyed this artbabble.
I believe that in efforts to remove young vulnerable children from their present lifestlye and condition, Jair and Gitte incorporated this idea of desiign to improve conditions. Jair and Gitte saw a community, the Umthombo streets of South Africa, that needed assistance and sought to helo these individuals. The children before the design was implanted were faced with the only options of sniffing glue, suffering from HIV, and subjected to a world of violence. Jair and Gitte didnt think their idea of changing these conditions would be effective but found that it would be. They gave these children a new place to call their own. The iconology here was represented in the red mailboxes for personal belongings that would give these children a sense of ownership. This would no doubt make them feel as if they were important and had something of their own besides the violent streets of South Africa. Jair and Gitte put in hammocks that would act as swings and allow people to look beyond what they see and create new meanings for it. By their efforts in making these children of the streets of Africa better, they proved that design definitely has the ability to improve some conditions.
