Meet the one of the employees, Tariq Robinson, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in an episode of this continuing series. Go behind the scenes at a major art museum to see what it takes to make it all work.
[Hey, Leslie. How are you doing?]
[Good. How did it go Saturday?]
[It went really well, really well...]
My name is Tariq Robinson, and I'm Coordinator of Youth and Family Programs.
[That would be me...I'm alright, doin' alright.]
Basically, I put on programs, like Family Days, at the IMA that entails getting families into the museum and comfortable, feeling more confident in using the museum
as a space that they can spend quality family time. The Star Studio is an installation space that
we couple art activities alongside whatever show that's up at that time. It's basically a space that's
meant to be interactive, hands on, unlike any other gallery in the museum.
The museum is an excellent place for families to visit. You know, a lot of times families feel a little threatened or just kind of uneasy about coming into the museum
just because things that we do have are so valuable but, you know, I think my job is basically, you know, help them to feel like, you know,
they can interact with art, you know, in a safe way.
We found a lot of times that families tend to breeze through galleries without really taking time to look at things, so we kind of developed
these activities where they would ask, you know, questions that would kind of again slow families down to kind of look at
works of art and then we provided details of works that they could, you know, then find in the gallery. It's actually been a pretty popular activity.
Whenever you see families, you know, smiling and laughing and having a good time...I definitely feel it's worth it.
"It's My Art", to me, means that there is something here for everyone and that, basically, everyone can feel welcome at the IMA.
