First trailer for "William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible," a new hour-long film from the producers of the Peabody-Award winning "Art in the Twenty-First Century" television series. The film gives viewers an intimate look into the mind and creative process of William Kentridge, the South African artist whose acclaimed work has made him one of the most dynamic and exciting contemporary artists working today. "William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible" premieres October 21, 2010 at 10:00 p.m. ET on PBS (check local listings). For more information, visit: art21.org/anythingispossible
A few years back, when I worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art(CMA) and taught at Cleveland Institute of Art(CIA) Kentridge was scheduled to give a public talk at the museum. I thought it terrific if he would talk privately to a group of students. Though discouraged by museum staff who thought in unlikely, I got close contact information, and almost immediately he agreed. Imagine a circle of seated students in the museum lobby, outside the auditorium, visitors milling about, 90 minutes before the lecture, Kentridge part of the circle, holding dialog, not court, discussing art and process and anything he would not be saying in the formal discussion to follow (his insistence). I, and other teachers remained at the periphery. His grace and generosity provided a moment that these students, and I, will never forget. I mention this only to add just a touch more insight into the artist for those who will see the show and love his work.
