David Goldblatt tells the story of Ernest Cole
Under apartheid, the system of racial segregation that shaped South African society from 1928 until 1994, photographer Ernest Cole was able to change his classification from "black" to "coloured" (the term used in apartheid legislation to describe individuals of mixed race). Photographer David Goldblatt considers the ways this change, which enabled Cole to leave South Africa for New York, impacted his work.
