"The Mill," 1645/1648, Rembrandt van Rijn
Explore Rembrandt van Rijn’s painting “The Mill” in this video from the Children’s Video Tour. Known as one of Rembrandt’s greatest works, this 17th-century painting depicts a large windmill against a stormy sky. Rembrandt enjoyed painting details of Holland’s landscape, including the farms, waterways, bridges, cottages, and mills that made it unique. The artist’s father owned a mill on the banks of the Old Rhine, near the town of Leiden. The mill was called “De Rijn,” which is Dutch for “the Rhine,” which is how his family got its name. How different do you suppose this scene might look if had been painted on a clear sunny day? On view in the West Building, Gallery 48. http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=1201
