Young viewers can enjoy the show in Antoine Watteau’s 18th-century painting “The Italian Comedians,” which was inspired by performances of the “Comedie Italienne,” a troupe of Italian actors who performed throughout France in the 17th and 18th centuries. The figures in Watteau’s painting are dressed in costumes typical of the “commedia dell'arte” theater, and depict masked stock characters such as the clown, the musician, and the old man. Can you spot the jester? On view in the West Building, Gallery 54. http://www.nga.gov/fcgi-bin/tinfo_f?object=32687 ----- Find the Children's Video Tour at http://www.nga.gov/education/timetravel/index.shtm
