In this behind the scenes video, we walk you through 7 years of our museum expansion project with special emphasis on The Ames Family Atrium. We have achieved a major milestone in Fall 2012 with our eight-year $350 million expansion and renovation project of our 39000 square feet Ames Family Atrium. Architect Rafael Vinñoly's vision of a light-filled commons connecting the community to art has been realized. Covered by a glass arch between 55 and 66 feet above the floor, the atrium connects the new east and west wings, original 1916 building and 1971 Marcel Breuer building. The innovative glass-covered courtyard will be used for museum programming, community meetings, performances, art installations, and event rentals. The Ames Family Atrium is one of the largest public rooms in Cleveland. In 2005, the Cleveland Museum of Art embarked on a multi-year, phased renovation and expansion project. The expanded facility will include the museum's two fully renovated architectural landmarks—the original 1916 Beaux-Arts building designed by Hubbel and Benes and Marcel Breuer's 1971 addition with its distinctive façade of alternating light and dark grey granite stripes—and three new structures designed by architect Rafael Viñoly. Work will continue on the atrium and the surrounding visitor amenities until a community celebration on Sunday, October 28 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm Join us for the free event that will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including special music ...
