During the 1700s in France, furniture makers perfected the art of creating complex designs using numerous thin pieces of wood. Craftsmen created these "paintings in wood" using an assortment of both natural and dyed wood veneers, selected for their colors and interesting grain. This video shows the process of making marquetry.
