Artist Abbas Akhavan reflects on his interest in horticulture, on how that influenced the making of such works as A Study for a Monument, and on how he learned about the behaviors and anatomies of plants from sculpting them in wax and bronze. Akhavan talks about “upscaling” the work in order to reference weaponry, the human body, and a bronze monument to an infamous political figure. He also explains his decision to exhibit the work spread out on white bed sheets on the ground.
