Ergin Çavuşoğlu discusses his video installation Crystal & Flame, on view at the Guggenheim in But a Storm Is Blowing from Paradise, in terms of the expressive languages of theater and film. He describes meeting a baker during location scouting and recounts a story that the baker tells in the film about a girl disguised as a boy smuggling goods between Syria and Turkey, the ending of which reminds Çavuşoğlu of Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar, which in turn influenced the making another film, Alterity.
