Sara Raza discusses her attempts to smuggle hidden ideas or “conceptual contraband” into her exhibition. Referring to artworks by Abbas Akhavan, Iman Issa, and Hassan Khan, Raza looks in particular detail at Ergin Çavuşoğlu's video installation Crystal & Flame, which draws on the writing of Italo Calvino to explore the polar opposites of its title and ponder the trade of illicit goods across the borders of Turkey and Syria, as well as broader ideas about black-market economies and value systems.
