As part of a collaborative project with MOCAtv and LAXArt, Carter Mull edges the line between seduction and social engagement. Here, Mull returns to his signature interest in the (re)circulation of images—Mull famously uses his works as platforms for further production, staging social interactions with his paintings and capturing these interventions in photos and video. This time, Mull plays producer on a photo shoot—techno and catering included—and hosts fashion-darling Chanel Castaneda at his downtown studio for lunch. Functioning like a Photoshop layer to the painting behind her, Castaneda perches on a school chair to eat a three-course lobster lunch, texting throughout. As this video work will be later recomposed into an object for future shows, Mull gives us both access to a freeze frame and insight into the immanent flow.
