The weimaraner is a dog that has become synonymous with artist William Wegman. Long before his work appeared on Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, Wegman began his practice of making still photographs and videos, exploring themes of cognition, propriety, and the absurdity of the mundane; in other bodies of painting, drawing, and video work, Wegman speaks about transcendentalism and understanding the natural world. Inside his New York studio, the artist describes how he came to working with his dogs -- Man Ray and Fay Ray -- and the creative process behind three rarely seen videos: Spelling Lesson (1974), Ordinary Deck (1997), and Installed Guitar (1998).
