Period & Style
In the midst of his transition from free jazz musician to visual artist, Brendan Fowler sung at NYC's Untitled Gallery, "the raddest thing about rules is you can break them." Fowler's is a career filled with contradictions and transformations, and his bodies of work make these their subject (stacking or "crashing" framed pictures to mix up photography and sculpture). Curating for MOCAtv, Fowler chooses a "life-changing" virtuosic, free jazz performance, an R&B scored Wade Guyton and Kelley Walker fan vid, and hip hop artist Le1f's "Wut" video. Of Le1f's incongruous position as a gay rapper as well as the set of his video (an infinite triangle worthy of M.C. Escher), Fowler praises, "they make the impossible seem real."
