Here, Leyster depicts herself as an artist at work, holding a paintbrush in one hand and a wooden palette in the other. On her easel is an unfinished painting of a fiddler. This subject matter is typical of Leyster, who often painted scenes of merriment that included actors, dancers, and musicians.
