This video was created for LaunchPad, a program of digital interpretive materials that supplement the viewing of works of art on display in the Art Institute of Chicago's galleries.

By the early 18th century, interior decorations became quite lavish, and clock cases, like this design by Jean-Pierre Latz, followed suit. Not simply brilliant in and of itself, the gilding of this clock case would have reflected the flickering light of the candles. Such light, in turn, was another sign of luxury; wax candles were expensive, so the ability to have social engagements continue into the evening hours was a sign of wealth. Guests to an evening affair in the home of this clock would also have been treated to the melody of its whimsical chimes, captured in this video for the first time in centuries!
