During a week-long residency at SOMA, an independent artist-run space and school in Mexico City, Paul Ramírez Jonas led a workshop focusing on alternative pedagogy. In this video, the artist recounts a transition in his practice from performance to participatory works. Featured are a selection of the artist’s works from 1995 to 2015, artist and participant interviews, and footage from each of the artist’s workshop sessions. Ramírez Jonas references Jacques Rancière’s The Ignorant Master as an influence, and describes workshop exercises such as making a mental map of the artistic process and devising questions about the participants’ creative motivations.
